- TomDreams can come true – even if they take over 30 years to materialize. In the 1970s I took thousands of Polaroid SX 70s at Fire Island Pines, recording the life of my friends and me. Back then, the book I designed with those pictures was deemed “too queer” to be commercial. What the censoring publishers really meant, was that it too honestly depicted us as sexual beings having a real good time.
I had to put the project on ice for the past 30 or more years. But this month, we began production of the book we expect to launch at the beginning of next summer.
As I begin writing the text, I see that the 30 year wait was well worth it. I can talk about matters today that I might have been too timid to admit back then. (Like what’s the statute of limitations for sex, drugs and disco :-) We did some lovely drugs and had a lot of sex. We played naked in the surf and danced many sweaty nights past sunrise. Miraculously, some of us survived. I’m here to show and tell the story of what those magical years were like.
